Tulbagh Winter Road Trip: A Scenic Getaway

A Winter Day Trip to Tulbagh: What We Experienced

Good morning, everyone! A few months ago, Angelique and I embarked on a Tulbagh winter road trip. Located about two and a half hours from home, we were eager to enjoy a scenic drive and capture fresh content for my website. The trip offered a perfect opportunity to explore the beauty of Tulbagh in winter, and we couldn’t wait to see what the day had in store.

A Scenic Drive to Tulbagh: The Beginning of Our Journey

We left around 9 AM, planning to arrive just in time for brunch. The drive was peaceful, and we looked forward to the day ahead.

Brunch at Kole Deeg: A Cozy Start to the Day

Our first stop was Kole Deeg, a renowned local restaurant where I was craving a hot cup of coffee. When we arrived, the staff was preparing for an afternoon music session. They welcomed us warmly, and we were seated quickly. I ordered my usual cappuccino, while Angelique chose a different drink to start our meal.

During our visit, a regular came in with his friendly Labrador dog. The dog eagerly sought attention from everyone, adding to the pleasant atmosphere of the restaurant. I ordered the roosterkoek, and it exceeded my expectations. It was delicious!

Exploring the Tulbagh Nursery: A Garden Lover’s Paradise

After brunch, we headed to the Tulbagh Nursery, where I had arranged to meet an old friend who manages the place. We wandered through the nursery, taking in the beautiful plants and impressive selection of garden equipment. We spent quite a bit of time in their rose department, which was a real treat for us, as we’re passionate about roses.

Museum Disappointment: A Missed Opportunity in Tulbagh

Next, we decided to visit the small museums in Tulbagh. Unfortunately, they were closed, even though their website said they should have been open. We couldn’t understand why they had closed just after noon. Naturally, Angelique and I felt disappointed, but we moved on to check out the markets advertised around town.

The Market Visit: Underwhelming Experience

When we arrived at the market, we found fewer than 10 stalls set up outside a restaurant. To be honest, we felt a bit let down by the small scale of the market. Despite the scenic drive and the nursery visit, the trip didn’t quite live up to our expectations.

Unexpected Find: Deli Co Vleis and the Best Steak Ever

On our way back, things took a pleasant turn. We passed through a tiny town (whose name I still can’t recall) and decided to take a detour. That’s when we found Deli Co Vleis. Since Saturday is our designated steak-and-chips night, I decided to stop in and grab some fresh meat. That turned out to be the highlight of our day. The steak was absolutely outstanding—possibly the best I’ve ever had. We also picked up some biltong, lamb, and other treats, all of which were fantastic.

Reflecting on the Journey: Memorable Moments from Our Winter Road Trip

In the end, our Tulbagh winter road trip didn’t go entirely as planned, but we still had a great time. Despite the unexpected closures and the small market, we found some delightful surprises along the way. Angelique and I love going on long drives, taking in the sights, and making the most of whatever comes our way.
