A Scenic Coastal Drive and a Lunch to Remember in Kleinmond
Good morning, everyone!
This past Saturday, Angelique and I embarked on a scenic coastal drive to Kleinmond, eager to enjoy the stunning views of the mountains on one side and the sea on the other. Our journey began in Bloubergstrand, and as we drove along the N2, we looked forward to a lunch experience in Kleinmond that would perfectly complement the breathtaking scenery. The mountains towered on one side, while the sea stretched out on the other. The waves crashed fiercely, creating a striking contrast with the majestic mountains. Despite the heavy winds, we remained focused on the scenic views and our desire to continue exploring.
Passing Through Small Towns: A Journey to Kleinmond
Along the way, we passed through several charming small towns before reaching Betty’s Bay. After two hours on the road, we felt hungry and thirsty, so we decided to stop in Kleinmond for a quick bite, eager to have the perfect coastal drive Kleinmond lunch experience.
A Disappointing Experience: Kleinmond Central Café
We ended up at Kleinmond Central Café, but unfortunately, the experience fell short of our expectations. Typically, I prefer not to write negative reviews, but this situation required mentioning. As soon as we walked into the café, we sensed something was off. The interior, filled with random antiques, felt cluttered, dusty, and overwhelming. Worse yet, the smell reminded me of an unclean butchery.
Though Kleinmond was crowded with holidaymakers, only five people were in the entire café. One waitress greeted us, though her disinterest was evident. She eventually approached us, but her attitude made it clear she wasn’t happy to serve us. We received a menu printed on dirty white paper, with no explanations or descriptions. When we requested pizza, she informed us that it was only available after 5 p.m., though the menu didn’t mention this. With limited options left, we decided to leave.
A Disturbing Encounter: The Café Owner’s Behavior
Things only worsened when the café owner, an elderly man in his 60s, laughed at us in a patronizing way as we walked out. He sarcastically said, “You’re welcome, come again.” I turned around and told him that we would never return—this experience was appalling.
As we reached the car, the owner followed us outside, yelling that we were parked in private parking. There were no signs to indicate this, and he continued mocking us, telling us to return for another meal. His strange behavior, combined with his unsettling laughter, made both Angelique and me uncomfortable. We had never encountered such a disturbing situation, and I would strongly advise against visiting Kleinmond Central Café.
A Pleasant Surprise: Perronne 25 Café
Thankfully, we found an alternative just 400 meters away—Perronne 25. Though the café was busy, we quickly found a seat inside, while most others enjoyed the outdoor seating. The waitress was attentive, the food arrived promptly, and the décor, with soft pink tones, created a warm, inviting atmosphere. The food was delicious, hot, and beautifully presented. Angelique and I agreed that this would be our go-to spot whenever we pass through Kleinmond.
A Bookshop Find: Oupa se Boekwinkel
After lunch, we explored further and discovered a small second-hand bookshop, Oupa se Boekwinkel, next to the café. As a book lover, I couldn’t resist, and we ended up purchasing several books.
Heading Home: Enjoying the Scenic Drive
Although we planned to visit Hermanus, the day was growing late, and we still had a long drive ahead. We decided to head back, once again marveling at the beauty of the mountains and the sea along the way.
Looking Ahead: A Special Surprise for 2025
It was a memorable day, and I look forward to sharing more in my next blog. A special surprise awaits everyone in the new year, so stay tuned!
On behalf of Angelique, Jeandrè and Fernando, and myself, we wish you all a Merry Christmas. May this festive season be filled with joy, peace, love, and blessings.
