Eikehof: Boutique Wine Farm on the Franschhoek Wine Route

Eikehof: A Must-Visit Stop on the Franschhoek Wine Route

Good morning, wine lovers! Today, I’m thrilled to share my experience visiting Eikehof, which marks the fifth stop on the Franschhoek Wine Route. Without a doubt, it has become my favorite winery in the area. Nestled at the foot of the beautiful Franschhoek mountains, this boutique wine farm offers much more than just exceptional wines—it provides a warm, welcoming atmosphere that instantly makes you feel at home.

Before I dive into the details about the farm, be sure to check out my previous posts about the world of wine and travel on Eat and Sleep News. You’ll find more exciting stories and recommendations to inspire your adventures!

A Warm Welcome at Eikehof

From the moment we arrived at Eikehof, it felt like we were greeted by family. Mrs. Malherbe, the owner’s wife, welcomed us with such warmth and friendliness. Her spontaneous nature not only reflects the farm’s charm but also plays a crucial role in its success. Consequently, it’s clear that she is an integral part of Eikehof’s story.

The Rich History of Eikehof

Eikehof’s fascinating history only enhances the experience. The Malherbe family has owned the farm for four generations, and its rich heritage dates back to 1903 when it was separated from the larger La Motte farm (La Motte Wine Estate). In fact, Francois Malherbe, the current owner, continues the legacy that his great-grandfather started by cultivating wine from ancient bush vine Semillon.

Interestingly, winemaking was paused in 1947, but Francois reignited this tradition in 1992. His dedication to reviving the farm’s winemaking legacy has certainly paid off. Moreover, his youngest daughter, Lizelle, represents the fifth generation of winemakers. In 2016, she created the award-winning Cape Ruby Port, a testament to the family’s deep passion and expertise.

Exceptional Wines to Savor

Eikehof’s wines are truly remarkable, and they stand out on the Franschhoek Wine Route. For starters, their wines are exclusive, only available at the farm, online, or through select high-end restaurants. You won’t find them in regular retail stores, which makes them even more special.

Beyond Wine: Proteas and Peaches

In addition to their fine wines, Eikehof has ventured into new areas of cultivation. In 2020, the Malherbe family planted proteas, South Africa’s national flower. These striking flowers now fill their tasting room with color and life. Furthermore, they began planting peach orchards, producing a range of delicious peach-based products, which have become a lovely addition to their offerings. This diversification highlights Eikehof’s commitment to sustainability and innovation, making each visit even more delightful.

A Memorable Visit

Visiting Eikehof is more than just a wine-tasting experience; it’s a journey that blends exceptional wines, warm hospitality, and stunning scenery. Whether you are savoring a tasting, purchasing a bottle of their famous Cape Ruby Port, or simply soaking in the peaceful ambiance, you will leave feeling truly enriched.

Eikehof has undeniably become my favorite stop on the Franschhoek Wine Route, and I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone looking for a special wine experience. For more information, be sure to visit them here.
