Visit Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery: A Boutique Wine Adventure

Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery: A Boutique Wine Experience

Good morning, wine lovers!
On the third leg of our wine route through Stellenbosch, we arrived at Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery. From the moment we arrived, the atmosphere immediately transported us back in time. It was as though we had stepped into the 1600s, surrounded by history and rich antique charm.

But the experience was not only historical; the warm hospitality from owner Retief Du Toit made our visit even more memorable. Situated in one of South Africa’s most celebrated wine regions, Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery offers a unique blend of history, craftsmanship, and unforgettable wines. If you’ve been following our wine adventures, you might remember our visit to Dornier Wine Estate in Stellenbosch – another great spot in the region. Be sure to check out that experience here.

The History of Deux Frères Winery

Deux Frères has a fascinating backstory. In 1998, brothers Retief and Stephan Du Toit took ownership of the farm. At the time, the property was relatively undeveloped, but the brothers saw immense potential. They began to transform the farm by planting 5,000 vines per hectare. This intensive planting method forces the roots to grow deeper into the soil, allowing the plants to access more minerals and produce better quality grapes.

Despite their modest 5-hectare farm, Deux Frères produces around 30,000 to 35,000 bottles of wine annually. However, in 2019, due to a severe drought in the Western Cape, production was reduced to only 15,000 bottles.

A Boutique Wine Experience at Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery

One of the standout features of Deux Frères Stellenbosch Winery is its boutique approach to winemaking. Unlike larger commercial wineries, Deux Frères focuses on crafting small batches of premium wines. The farm does not sell its wines in retail stores, and instead, it exports around 90% of its production to the USA, primarily through Slosch Adler Venera. You can find their wines exclusively in California and select regions of Europe.

This commitment to quality is evident in every bottle, and the wines are truly exceptional. Whether you are a connoisseur or a casual wine drinker, the unique flavors and craftsmanship are sure to impress.

A Cozy Retreat: Guest Villas and Warm Hospitality

One of the highlights of Deux Frères is its Guest Villas, which offer a homely, intimate atmosphere. From the moment you arrive, you’ll feel like you’re part of the family. The hospitality at Deux Frères is unmatched, and it’s no surprise that their villas are often fully booked. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat in Stellenbosch, this is the place to be.

During our visit, we stayed in one of the villas and experienced firsthand the warm, welcoming environment. It truly felt like home. Whether you’re here for a wine tasting, a tour of the vineyards, or just to unwind, Deux Frères offers a unique and enriching experience.

A Memorable Wine Tasting

We couldn’t resist trying a glass of their Rosé. Chilled to perfection, it was unlike any Rosé I’ve tasted before. Smooth, crisp, and bursting with flavor, I can confidently say it’s the best Rosé I’ve ever had. After experiencing such a remarkable wine, I now find it hard to enjoy Rosé from any other farm.

Retief’s warmth and the insight he shared during our conversation made our visit even more special. Angelique and I had such a good time that we lost track of time and ended up staying much longer than we planned. But honestly, I’d visit again in a heartbeat, purely for the homely atmosphere and the exceptional hospitality.
