Good morning, everyone! In our second leg of the adventure, we visited Rhodes Memorial at Devil’s Peak. Although we weren’t sure what to expect, we were eager to explore this historical site.
An Unforgettable View
As we drove up the mountain, the sight of Rhodes Memorial perched on the slopes of Devil’s Peak intrigued us. Upon reaching the monument, we were instantly captivated by the breathtaking view that stretched across the city. The location of the memorial offers a spectacular vantage point, perfect for taking in the beauty of Cape Town and its surroundings.
The Walk to the Monument
After parking the car, we began our walk towards the memorial. The stairs leading up to the building are a bit of a climb, but well worth the effort. Once we reached the top, we took some time to absorb the stunning view before continuing our exploration.
At first glance, the memorial is a simple structure, but the surroundings are just as remarkable. The area around the memorial is peaceful, making it the perfect spot to pause and enjoy the scenic beauty.
A Peek at the History of Rhodes Memorial
Rhodes Memorial at Devil’s Peak is dedicated to Cecil John Rhodes, a prominent figure in South African history. Born in 1853, Rhodes was a mining magnate and the founder of De Beers. He served as the Prime Minister of the Cape Colony from 1890 to 1896.
The memorial itself is designed in the style of an ancient Greek temple, which adds a touch of uniqueness to the site. Situated at Rhodes Drive on Devil’s Peak, the monument serves as a tribute to Rhodes’ legacy and his impact on the region.
Exploring the Area Around the Memorial
While taking in the view, we noticed the Rhodes Memorial area is also home to a small forest of Silvertrees, a famous native tree species. These trees contribute to the tranquil atmosphere of the memorial, enhancing the sense of calm.
Interestingly, the memorial also marks the beginning of several hiking trails up Devil’s Peak. If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, it’s the perfect starting point for your hiking or cycling adventure. In fact, we plan to return in the future to hike Devil’s Peak, but this time with a guide for added safety.
Planning Our Hiking Adventure
We are looking forward to hiking Devil’s Peak in March. Since neither of us has much hiking experience, we will choose one of the easier trails and bring a hiking guide along. Having a guide will ensure we don’t get lost and will provide added security in case of an emergency.
A Day Well Spent
All in all, our visit to Rhodes Memorial at Devil’s Peak was an unforgettable experience. The views, history, and natural surroundings made it an enjoyable day for us. We plan to return for more adventures in the future, and perhaps, take on one of the more challenging trails. If you’re looking for a peaceful retreat with a touch of history, this spot should definitely be on your list.
