Exploring the Franschhoek Wine Route: A Journey Through Grande Provence
Good morning, wine lovers and adventurers!
This past weekend, my daughter Angelique and I had the pleasure of exploring the famous Franschhoek Wine Route, a must-visit destination often referred to as the “Food and Wine Capital of the Cape.” Our first stop was the historic Grande Provence, a remarkable estate brimming with rich history, exceptional wines, and stunning scenery.
The History of the Franschhoek Wine Route and Grande Provence
Established in 1694, Grande Provence was founded by Pierre Joubert, a French Protestant who fled religious persecution. The estate is located in the heart of the 47-acre Franschhoek Valley, just an hour’s drive from Cape Town. What’s more, it’s so close that you can easily visit for a day or even a half-day trip. After marrying Isabeau Rossouw, Pierre acquired several local farms, including Belingchamp, L’Ormarins, La Motte, and La Roche. As a result, their legacy endures through sprawling vineyards and iconic Cape Dutch architecture.
Fast forward to April 2004, when a consortium of Dutch and Belgian visionaries took over the estate. They continue to nurture its rich history while adding contemporary touches. Consequently, the estate has successfully blended its heritage with modern amenities to create an unforgettable experience for guests.
