A Challenging Yet Memorable Hike to Admirals Waterfall
Saturday’s hike to Admirals Waterfall didn’t go as smoothly as we had hoped. Despite our best efforts to plan ahead, things took an unexpected turn. Angelique and I were recovering from being sick in the days prior to the hike, so we packed all the essentials: water bottles, energy bars, tissues, and even medicine. We were ready for a great day outdoors at Admirals Waterfall. However, as we soon found out, not everything went according to plan.
Getting Lost on the Way to Admirals Waterfall
The first hurdle came when we relied on Google Maps to guide us to the starting point. Unfortunately, the route it suggested was completely wrong. After some confusion, we stopped to ask for directions. Finally, we found the parking area and the trailhead. To our surprise, the hiking trail started with a set of stairs right next to a petrol station. From there, the gravel road wound uphill—steeply uphill, and not the easy, gradual incline we had imagined.
Hiking Through Town Before Reaching Admirals Waterfall
As we trudged up the steep path, I found myself asking for directions again. Most of the hike ended up taking us through a town, which was honestly a bit disappointing. We had expected a more natural, serene environment for our adventure.
Eventually, we reached a gravel road that led to Admirals Waterfall. With renewed enthusiasm, we pushed forward, hopeful for a spectacular view. Along the way, we were treated to beautiful scenery: butterflies fluttering around, birds chirping, and a variety of plants adding vibrant color to the landscape. But little did we know, our journey was about to get much more interesting.
A Close Encounter with Baboons Near Admirals Waterfall
As we neared the waterfall, we saw signs warning us about baboons and advising hikers not to carry food or water openly. While such warnings are common in places like Table Mountain, we thought little of it. After all, we were excited to see the waterfall and soak in the beauty of nature.
However, things took a turn when we came across a large group of baboons. The baboons were not just large but also had babies with them, which made us extra cautious. Both Angelique and I felt a sudden sense of unease. Trusting my instincts, I suggested we turn around—something I wasn’t thrilled about, but my gut feeling told me it was the right decision.
Just as we walked back, we heard a loud commotion. Looking behind us, we saw the baboons fighting amongst themselves. The scene felt surreal, almost like something out of a movie. I wished I had taken a video, but by the time I grabbed my phone, it was over.
Deciding that my instincts had been correct, we retraced our steps back to the car. Along the way, we encountered more butterflies, birds, and even a few lizards. The hike back was steep, but we managed to reach the car feeling hot, thirsty, and hungry—but also grateful for the experience.
Wildlife Around Admirals Waterfall
The mountains surrounding Admirals Waterfall are home to a variety of wildlife. These include three types of mammals, such as the Chacma Baboon, along with several species of snakes and lizards. The area also hosts many bird species, including Raptors. Historically, the Cape Mountain Lion once roamed these mountains, though it is now extinct.
Looking Forward to Winter and Future Hikes to Admirals Waterfall
One fun fact about Admirals Waterfall is that it’s often described as a hidden treasure, accessible via a short 3 km hike. The waterfall is particularly stunning during the winter months when it flows at its fullest. Perhaps we’ll return in the winter to see the waterfall at its peak.
