A Visit to the Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary: A Peaceful Encounter with African Penguins
Good morning, everyone! After an adventurous hike at the Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, we still had some time left, so we decided to visit somewhere truly heartwarming. Our destination? The Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary—a spot brimming with charm and the perfect opportunity to witness adorable African penguins up close.
Arrival at Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary
Upon arriving at the sanctuary, we were greeted by gusty winds, making the atmosphere feel wild and exhilarating. In fact, when I opened my car door, the wind was so powerful it slammed into the car next to mine. Thankfully, there was no damage to either vehicle, and we were soon off on our adventure.
Before diving into our walk through the sanctuary, we took a moment to enjoy the breathtaking views. The scenery is simply stunning, offering a unique combination of nature, wildlife, and the open sea. Once we had taken in the views and snapped a few pictures, we were ready to begin our journey on the wooden bridge that leads to the penguin colony.
The Scenic Walk to the Penguins
The walk toward the penguins is quite lengthy, but it’s undoubtedly worth every step. As we strolled along the beach, we were treated to an array of sights—on one side, the beach was home to penguins, and on the other, we could see a breeding ground where penguins protect their eggs in small cement fixtures.
As we walked, I couldn’t help but fall in love with these charming creatures. Penguins are irresistibly adorable. Their quirky walk, which reminds me of an old man trying to hurry, was particularly entertaining. I found myself wanting to scoop one up and cuddle it, though, of course, that’s not allowed. It’s hard not to be captivated by their unique personalities and the sounds they make.
Encountering the Penguin Colony
After a while, we finally reached the end of the bridge, where we were greeted by a massive colony of African penguins. The sight was mesmerizing. We watched in awe as the penguins moved about, taking a few pictures along the way, while absorbing the peaceful atmosphere created by the sea and its rhythmic waves.
Unfortunately, the strong winds did affect my video footage, but it didn’t take away from the serene beauty of the moment. The Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary is home to over 2,000 breeding pairs of African penguins, making it one of the largest colonies in Africa. Not only are there penguins, but the sanctuary also hosts three species of cormorants: Crowned, Cape, and Bank cormorants.
A Bit of History
The sanctuary’s history is fascinating. It began in 1982 with just two penguins for breeding purposes, and it has since grown into one of the most important penguin colonies in South Africa. One of the most exciting aspects of the Stony Point Penguin Colony is that it is one of only two mainland breeding colonies of the African penguin in the entire country. It’s an incredible place to visit if you’re passionate about wildlife conservation.

Wrapping Up a Wonderful Visit
We spent about an hour and a half at the Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary, soaking in the tranquility and observing the penguins in their natural habitat. Afterward, we headed back to the greater Cape Town area, which was nearly two hours of driving. Along the way, we stopped between Pringle Bay and Gordon’s Bay to take in a breathtaking coastal view. Even though the winds were still fierce, we enjoyed a peaceful moment by the sea, watching the waves crash against the rocks.
Our day at Stony Point Penguins Sanctuary was truly memorable, and I can’t recommend it enough for anyone visiting the area. It’s a serene and fascinating stop that you’ll be glad you made.
