Good morning, everyone! This past Saturday, we had an unforgettable experience at the South African Air Force Museum in Ysterplaat, Milnerton. From the moment we entered, the museum impressed us with its scale, beauty, and historical richness.
Welcomed with Warmth
The volunteering staff were exceptionally friendly, helpful, and knowledgeable. We started our visit at the main entrance, enjoying our usual coffee before beginning what would become a journey of a lifetime.
Exploring the Hangars
We were guided to the hangars inside the base, where all the museum’s airplanes are housed. First, we received a brief history lesson before exploring the aircraft. Our first highlight was the Shakelton MR3, a massive airplane featuring a toilet basin and a sleeping area. Walking inside it was thrilling, though I admit my fear of closed spaces and heights made me a bit uneasy.
Next, we explored the other aircraft on display. Angelique eagerly climbed ladders to take photos and even had the chance to sit inside the Mirage D1 cockpit. She also got to wear a real Air Force helmet, which she described as surprisingly heavy.
Majestic Aircraft Up Close
The Mirage F1 stole the show with its stunning design. Angelique climbed up to the cockpit and couldn’t stop sharing what she saw. Then, we explored the Oryx helicopter and the Royal Navy helicopter, both used by the SA Army in war zones. These helicopters allow troops to disembark mid-air, showcasing the ingenuity of Air Force operations.
For us, this day captured exactly what we were looking for. The museum has no entrance fee, though donations are welcome. The staff shared fascinating historical facts, making the experience even more memorable.
Why the Museum is a Must-Visit
A visit to the South African Air Force Museum highlights the impressive history of South African aviation. Seeing the majestic aircraft up close—two helicopters and around eleven airplanes—truly brings history to life. Even if you don’t understand the instrument panels, the scale and design of these planes are awe-inspiring.
We plan to return on Heritage Day, 24 September, to take our sons along for the same experience. For those interested in following our adventures, you can also check out our previous blog posts here for more family-friendly outings in Cape Town.
This visit reminded us why Cape Town offers such unique historical attractions. A day at the South African Air Force Museum is perfect for anyone seeking a mix of education, nostalgia, and fun.
