Good morning, everyone! It has been some time since our last blog. Life feels hectic, and big changes are coming soon. So, before Cape Town heats up for summer, Angelique and I decided to go on one final big adventure. We chose hiking in Cape Town, expecting a relaxed beginner trail with minimal effort. However, things turned out quite different!
The Steep Footpath Surprise
We started our journey on a narrow footpath—supposed to be a shortcut. Instead, it challenged us from the first step. The route climbed steeply with rocks to scale and no flat resting spots. Although tough, the scenery already looked breathtaking. Our legs quickly learned that this “easy walk” was actually a full-on workout.
Halfway up, the shortcut met a wider jeep track. At that point, our legs, hips, and feet loudly reminded us that hiking in Cape Town requires more fitness than we expected.
Choosing the Scenic Route
Another shortcut appeared, but after the rocky footpath experience, we decided to stay on the jeep track. It felt longer but far more manageable. Every turn gave us more incredible views, and we constantly met friendly hikers, runners, and even cyclists. Naturally, we stopped often to greet the adorable dogs joining the adventure with their owners.
A Fear of Heights Takes Over
As we approached the final stretch—about 100 meters from the top—the trail opened up with steep drop-offs and no trees beside us. My fear of heights kicked in. A full panic attack froze me in place. I couldn’t go forward or backward. After a few minutes of breathing and refocusing, we made the call: it was safer to turn around.
Even so, reaching that height felt like a huge win.
Heading Down With Wildlife Watching
The walk back took the full jeep trail. We noticed stunning flowers along the route and even spotted a snake in a tree. Moments later, it fell out and disappeared down the mountain! That motivated us to move a little faster. Cape Town truly keeps the adrenaline going.
Why We’ll Definitely Do It Again
Although we didn’t reach the peak, hiking in Cape Town rewarded us with views we will never forget. We can’t wait to try again once we feel ready for that final push.
If you visit Cape Town, make time for a mountain hike. Bring enough water, pack a small energy snack, and always share your live location on WhatsApp with someone you trust.
