A Memorable Hike at Harold Porter Botanical Gardens: A Beautiful Journey Into Nature
Good morning, everyone, and welcome back! On Saturday, we wrapped up our March hiking theme with an unforgettable experience at Harold Porter Botanical Gardens. We started and ended our hike surrounded by lush greenery, but this time, we encountered something a little different: waterfalls.
The Start of Our Journey: A Cozy Botanical Garden
Unlike our previous botanical garden hikes, this one offered more than just flowers and trees. At Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, we found a peaceful atmosphere right from the start. The trail began with an easy, uphill path, surrounded by lush gardens. There were no rocks or slippery mud to slow us down, so we were able to keep a good pace.
We began our hike by a serene pond filled with running water and vibrant water lilies. As we walked through a few winding turns, we anticipated what was to come next. Eventually, we reached a wooden bridge, which marked the transition from the garden area to the more rugged hiking trail.
A Smooth Transition: From Garden to Hiking Trail
After passing through the gardens, we ventured onto the hiking path at Harold Porter Botanical Gardens, which became a bit more challenging. The terrain was slightly uphill, but the trail was still manageable. Along the way, we passed through a captivating lane of trees, creating an eerie, yet beautiful, atmosphere. The trees were so imposing they could easily be featured in a horror movie.
Despite the shadows of the towering trees, the hike was comfortable, and we enjoyed each step of the way. As we continued, the distant calls of baboons echoed from the mountains. We didn’t let it worry us, assuming the baboons were far away, so we carried on laughing, chatting, and snapping photos of the spectacular views.
Reaching the Disa Waterfall: A Magical Escape
Finally, we arrived at the Disa Waterfall. This moment felt like stepping into a completely different world. Surrounded by mountains, tall trees, and the calming sound of flowing water, we were transported into a tranquil fairytale-like environment. At this point, we were completely cut off from the world around us, with no cell phone signal to disturb our peace.
The waterfall itself was stunning. The dark pool at its base, surrounded by lush trees, added to the serenity of the scene. The water flowed gently, and we even spotted tadpoles swimming in the stream. We lingered here for about 20 minutes, not wanting to leave this peaceful haven.
A Close Encounter: Baboons on the Trail
As we prepared to leave, we took one last photo of Angelique crossing the wooden bridge leading back to the trail. That’s when things got interesting. While I was taking photos of the waterfall, I noticed baboons descending the cliffs nearby. It reminded us of our previous experiences at Kirstenbosch Gardens and Admirals Waterfall.
As we stood on the bridge, trying to take a few final pictures, the baboons reached our path and started approaching. We were caught between the baboons and the trees with no way to retreat. The three young baboons began playing while one adult kept a watchful eye on us.
We remained completely still, too scared to move or even take photos. As if the situation wasn’t intense enough, the mother baboon approached us. We waited silently, not daring to make a sound until she passed. Once she was out of sight, we slowly made our way back to the garden, ready for a well-deserved break.
Reflections and Future Plans: A Truly Memorable Hike
After our unforgettable encounter with the baboons, we treated ourselves to a relaxing brunch at the garden’s restaurant. Our hike at Harold Porter Botanical Gardens was truly one for the books. I’m already thinking about returning with my sister, who will be visiting from Johannesburg in April.
Stay tuned for my next blog, where I’ll share our visit to the Stony Point Penguin Colony. We had just as much fun there as we did on our hike—though the wind was a bit more intense! April will focus on animal encounters across the Western Cape, so don’t miss it.
