World of Birds and Wildlife Sanctuary: A Fun Family Day in Hout Bay
As part of our ongoing animal-themed month, we visited the World of Birds and Wildlife Sanctuary in Hout Bay. After spending previous weekends with majestic big cats, we shifted gears and spent some quality time with birds and monkeys—and what a refreshing change it turned out to be.
What to Expect at the Sanctuary in Hout Bay
The sanctuary greets visitors with a vibrant mix of birdlife. It’s easy to get swept up in the variety. From parrots and cockatoos to ducks, geese, flamingos, and even penguins, the collection truly impressed us. One enclosure held doves with feathers that shimmered blue—they caught everyone’s eye immediately.
Each section offered its own charm. One parrot greeted us with a cheerful “hello” while bobbing its head. Just a few cages away, a cockatoo demanded all the attention. Every time we tried to move along, it did something quirky to keep us around. Clearly, this bird enjoyed the spotlight.
More Than Just Birds: Wildlife and More
Although the sanctuary highlights its bird population, it also features several other animals. Along our walk, we met alpacas, bucks, and some rather curious tortoises. One area even introduced us to a large spider—definitely not expected, but still fascinating.

An Up-Close Encounter with the Monkeys
The highlight of our visit came in the monkey section. This area allows for up-close interaction. We entered the enclosure and took our seats while squirrel monkeys curiously approached us. They climbed onto our shoulders, sat on our laps, and even played with our hair. One cheeky monkey found Angelique’s hair especially entertaining—this instantly became her favorite part of the day.
A Return Visit to the Sanctuary
We loved the experience so much that we returned over Easter with my sister from Roodepoort and her two boys. Once again, the World of Birds and Wildlife Sanctuary delivered an unforgettable day. It’s definitely a place we plan to revisit in a few months.
Although animal month is coming to an end, we’re already looking forward to this weekend’s surprise destination. My co-host still hasn’t revealed what’s in store, but we’re sure it’ll be another fun outing.
