22 Waterfalls Porterville: An Unforgettable Hiking Adventure

Hiking at 22 Waterfalls Porterville: An Unforgettable Adventure

Good morning, everyone! It’s a cool and cloudy day here in Cape Town, with just a hint of rain in the air. Last Saturday, my co-host and daughter embarked on our second-to-last hike for March. This time, we ventured to the stunning 22 Waterfalls Porterville. Despite the misty weather, light rain, and slippery conditions, we were able to experience two incredible waterfalls before deciding to turn back.

Though the rain and mist made it more challenging, it was still a hike worth taking. Here’s a look at our adventure and the beautiful scenery we encountered.

A Cloudy Start to Our Hike

Our hike began with a bit of a setback. Believe it or not, we got lost within the first 100 meters! Thankfully, we quickly found the correct route and made our way toward the first waterfall. The weather may have been misty and overcast, but it didn’t dampen our spirits.

The owner of 22 Waterfalls Porterville had suggested we take the longer route to the first waterfall. This was a helpful recommendation, especially since my daughter, Angelique, has been dealing with nerve damage and a tendon injury in her arm. The alternative path was less strenuous, which allowed us to enjoy the hike at a more comfortable pace.

Reaching the First Waterfall: A Hidden Paradise

Upon reaching the first waterfall, we were immediately struck by its beauty. The surroundings were lush and green, with trees towering above, creating a serene atmosphere that Angelique affectionately renamed as a “rainforest.” The misty air and the cascading water made it feel like a magical retreat, away from the world.

Though the path was slippery due to the rain, we took extra caution as we approached the waterfall. I couldn’t resist— I was tempted to jump into the pool beneath the waterfall for a refreshing swim. The water was surprisingly warm, but we decided to save that for another visit.

The Long Route to the Second Waterfall

Next, we set our sights on the second waterfall, which the owner had mentioned is the second-largest of the 22. To reach it, we had to climb a slippery wooden ladder, which was not ideal given the wet conditions. Instead, we opted for the longer route, which took us through rocky paths and dense vegetation. Despite the added challenge, the views were breathtaking and definitely made it worthwhile.

After a while, we finally arrived at the second waterfall, and it did not disappoint. The sheer size of it left us in awe, as we stood taking in the sight of the water crashing into the pool below. At that moment, I couldn’t help but want to take another dip. The water was warm and inviting, and despite the rain, we decided to linger for a bit longer.

Heading Back: A Lesson in Navigating Wet Terrain

As we made our way further up the mountain, the conditions began to worsen. The rain grew heavier, and the mist rolled in, making the trail even more treacherous. We encountered slippery rocks and wet surfaces that made it difficult to continue safely, especially since Angelique couldn’t use both arms due to her injury. When we reached the slippery ladder again, it became clear that we needed to turn around.

Luckily, I knew the best way to return. We followed the main footpath down the mountain, avoiding any side trails. Along the way, we ended up at a farm dam where we met a friendly fisherman. Afterward, we stopped by the farm office to inform the owner of our safe return.

A Final Thought on 22 Waterfalls Porterville

Before we left, the owner shared that the best time to visit 22 Waterfalls Porterville is when the area has not had rain for at least a week. That way, the trails are safer, and the waterfalls are at their most spectacular. Based on our experience, we’re already planning our next visit and have scheduled it for a dry weekend in the coming months.

The owner also recommended a wonderful coffee shop in Porterville town called Koppikoffi, which we can’t wait to try. For more details about our visit to Koppikoffi, check out my next blog post.
